Conductors work as members of two- or three-person train crews and perform duties associated with moving trains, railcars, and locomotives in rail yards and on the road.

They coordinate the assembly of trains and perform any ground work outside the locomotive cab while in the yard or en route (e.g. operating track turnouts, picking up cars, making emergency repairs, etc.).

Responsibilities

The statements in this section are essential job functions that an employee must be able to perform with or without accommodations to achieve the objectives of the Conductor job.

  • Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, railway rules and regulations relating to safety and operations
  • Give and receive various forms of oral and printed instructions on the movement and placement of railway cars
  • Assembly/disassembly of trains in the railway yard and removal/disassembly of wagons on the way
  • Observe, interpret and relay signals to ensure the safe movement of trains and locomotives
  • Track change operation to change locomotive and wagon routes
    Inspect the condition of a train and equipment
  • Make effective decisions in unfamiliar locations or emergency situations
  • Effectively communicate with the rail traffic control center, other train crews and other departments on a regular basis via portable radio

Training

Selected candidates will participate in an intensive paid training program that includes 11 weeks of training (7 weeks in the classroom at the CN Campus in Winnipeg, MB and 4 weeks of field training).

CN now offers an enhanced and extremely competitive training salary. Expenses related to transportation, accommodation and meals while in Winnipeg are covered by the company.

After these initial 11 weeks, candidates will complete a minimum of 45 trips as an extra crew member to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Successful completion of the entire training program is mandatory to work as a conductor and includes written examinations and field training (including physical requirements).

Working conditions and physical requirements

  • Work a flexible schedule with regular and predictable attendance, in keeping with the 24/7 railway environment (includes night work hours, weekend work hours, holidays, some overtime and being away from home for extended periods of time)
  • Push, pull, lift and carry up to 90 pounds
  • Working outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions
  • Operate various devices on railcars and locomotives, such as uncoupling levers and hand brakes
  • Going up and down stairs of moving carriages
  • Grasping and holding objects while walking on the side of a train
  • Walking for prolonged and frequent periods
  • Frequent bending, stooping, crouching and kneeling
  • Meet medical fitness requirements for the position, including those established by the Railway Association of Canada, such as the ability to recognize and distinguish between signal colors

Other requirements

  • Write and pass safety and rules exams. (Note: as per collective agreement, subsequent locomotive engineer qualification mandatory to maintain seniority/employment.)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Obtaining and maintaining the Driver’s Rules Card
  • Possess and maintain a passport that allows entry/re-entry into Canada and the United States (in certain specified locations)
  • Proficiency in oral and written communications

Assets

  • Completion of college or vocational/technical school and/or experience as a freight driver
  • Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory/safety environment
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

Local Sign-On Incentive Bonus

The following conditions will only apply to newly hired employees after successful completion of their training period

  • Upon completion of the probationary period, the employee will be entitled to a payment of $5,000.
  • Upon completion of 12 months of employment as a qualified driver, the employee will be entitled to a payment of $5,000.

Approval for qualification subject to company discretion. Incentive not applicable to current CN RailTransportation employees.
